Commercial Water Park Raft Inspection Guide: What to Check Before Opening
A repeatable pre-opening inspection for commercial rafts, plus asset tracking, quarantine, and documentation that supports replacement planning.

A raft inspection program does two jobs: it keeps unsafe rafts off the ride, and it builds the record you need to decide when a raft has reached the end of its life. Both depend on checking the same points the same way every time, so results are comparable from day to day and from raft to raft.
This guide covers what to check before opening, how to inspect each part of a raft, and how to handle a raft that fails. It applies to family tubes, multi-passenger rafts, and specialty rafts. Follow the raft manufacturer's inspection requirements and the ride manufacturer's operating requirements for your specific equipment; use this as a structure, not a substitute.

Pre-opening inspection
Before the attraction opens, every raft in the rotation gets a check. This is a go/no-go pass done in good light with the raft at operating inflation:
- Raft holds its shape and firmness and has not lost air overnight.
- No new cuts, punctures, or abrasion through to the fabric.
- All seams intact with no lifting or splitting.
- All handles present, securely anchored, and undamaged.
- Floor intact and connected to the tube.
- Valves seated and capped.
- Raft is clean and free of foreign objects.
- Asset ID is legible, and warning markings are present.
Any raft that fails a point comes out of the rotation.
Exterior fabric and abrasion
Walk the full outside surface. Distinguish cosmetic wear from structural wear:
- Cosmetic: surface scuffs, faded graphics, staining, light haze in the coating.
- Structural: coating worn through to the reinforcing fabric, fuzzed or cut yarns, gouges, thin spots, and any puncture. Once base fabric is exposed or damaged, that area has lost strength.
Pay attention to the bottom, the leading edge, and any point that contacts ride structure. Repeated damage in one spot points to a mechanical problem on the ride, not normal wear.
Seams and bonded joints
Run a hand and eye along every seam. On welded rafts, look for edges that have started to lift or peel and for weld lines that are hard, brittle, or discolored. On glued or taped construction, look for released adhesive, curling tape, or a joint that flexes more than the surrounding fabric. A seam that is opening will keep opening under load — treat it as a priority.
Valves
- Each valve seats fully and seals — no hiss, no bubbles when wet-tested.
- Valve caps or covers are present and secure.
- The valve body is tight to the raft and its mounting patch is fully bonded.
- No cross-threading, cracking, or debris in the valve.
A raft that will not hold its set pressure but has no visible external damage often has a valve issue or a pinhole. If neither turns up, aging fabric porosity is a possibility, and that is an end-of-life indicator rather than a repair.
Handles and attachment points
Handles are a common failure location because riders load them hard and unpredictably. Check every handle for:
- Cut, abraded, or UV-chalked webbing.
- Broken or pulled stitching.
- Anchor patches that are lifting, or hardware that is backing out.
- Grommets and D-rings that are deformed, cracked, or corroded.
A handle you are not confident in is a reason to pull the raft. On rafts with replaceable components, worn wear pads and some handle assemblies can be renewed without replacing the raft — confirm what is replaceable on your model.
Floor
- Floor material is intact — no punctures, delamination, or worn-through areas.
- The floor-to-tube connection is sound all the way around.
- Any self-bailing openings are clear and undamaged.
- The floor is not sagging, stretched, or holding water where it should not.
Floor damage and floor-to-tube separation are structural and are usually difficult to restore to full strength in the field. A raft with a compromised floor generally comes out of service.
Deformation and loss of shape
Compare the raft to a known-good example of the same model. A tube that has stretched, a raft that will not hold a round profile, or a permanent set that changes how the raft rides indicates the material has changed. This is not repairable and points to replacement.
Inflation
Inflate to the manufacturer's specified firmness for your conditions, not by feel. Under-inflated rafts ride poorly and load seams and the floor unevenly; over-inflated rafts stress seams and are less forgiving in impacts. Note any raft that needs topping up noticeably more often than the rest of the fleet — that raft is telling you there is a leak to find or that it is aging out. Account for temperature: rafts gain and lose pressure as ambient and water temperature change through the day.
Cleanliness
Rinse rafts to remove treated water, sunscreen, minerals, and grit, all of which are abrasive or chemically aggressive over time. Remove any foreign objects. Let rafts dry before extended storage so moisture is not trapped in seams and pockets. Avoid solvents, petroleum products, abrasive pads, and close-range pressure washing.
Identification and asset tracking
Every raft needs a permanent, legible asset ID. Tie inspection records, repairs, and disposition to that ID. Asset-level history is what lets you see which rafts wear fastest, show that an inspection program is in place, and plan replacements before a raft fails mid-season. This record feeds directly into the repair-versus-replace decision.
Quarantine procedure
A raft that fails inspection must be physically and administratively separated from the active fleet:
- Tag the raft clearly as out of service with the date and the reason.
- Move it to a designated quarantine area, not back to the raft storage.
- Log the failure against the raft's asset ID.
- Route it for evaluation — repair, manufacturer assessment, or retirement — and record the outcome.
- Only return it to service after the repair is verified and the raft passes a fresh inspection.
Retired rafts should be defaced or destroyed so they cannot re-enter service anywhere.
Documentation
Keep, at minimum, for each inspection:
- Date and time.
- Raft asset ID.
- Inspector name.
- Findings, point by point.
- Any repair performed and by whom.
- Disposition: return to service, repair, quarantine, retire.
Daily vs. periodic inspection
Think of inspection at two levels. Daily checks are fast go/no-go passes that confirm each raft is safe to run that day. Periodic detailed inspections — on a schedule set by the manufacturer and your operating volume — clean each raft and examine it closely for slow-developing issues like seam creep, coating aging, and handle-webbing wear that a daily glance would miss. Both feed the same asset records.
